The Grateful Dead are at the top of their game, which is covered in several of the other reviews. I came hear to say that the New Riders also threw down a crisp, beautiful set. It helps that the sound quality of this recording is excellent. I can't image how mind-blowing it must have been to see the Dead and NRPS crank out two shows of killer, ground-breaking music in the same day. Check this show out.

Thank you so much for adding the original stereo recordings!! As an audiophile I'm through the roof after listening to the first set in mono and then switching to stereo Candyman. Quite a treat to have the stereo recordings from such are early and history-making show. Thank you!

This is an historical date: the only time they played 2 shows in a day, with two acoustic sets/two electric, and where both shows featured a middle set by New Riders, with half of the Dead joining. Graham had a policy for a while in '68-'70 where his Fill E headliners had to turn the house. Starting 6/14/68 the Dead did 12 of these dates (when it was still the Village Theater, they also did two dates with two sets/two tickets for Bill Barenholtz, 12/26 & 12/27/67 - don't know if that's why Graham adopted the policy). But with the three-set, NRPS format they had at the time, shows were already long, so they only did the full set-up for Bill once (he didn't pay the bands double), for their final double bill. Deadheads had become savvy and stopped going to the time-limited first show, causing a lopsided house for Graham. Of the 24 songs in the late show, only 6 had been released on an album [all in the 2nd set], which would have confused any newbies; and only 3 of 16 in the early show. The second set of the late show is a massive, over-2hr set.
Early ShowFirst Set. Starting with a fine Dough Knees, there's no bum turn in this acoustic set. After a downbeat take on a blithesome, standalone Rider, Jer calls for Pig to come out (the official cuts his patter with hecklers). Pig delivers semi-rarity Ain't it Crazy, the Lightnin' Hopkins cover. The third one, but not the best one, it's followed by a Stars and Stripes Forever tuning. The arrangement for Friend of the Devil isn't filled out like the late show. Long Black Limousine is the 2nd of 2 in '70 and the final one (of 4, unless it was played in '66 - either way a definite rarity). You can hear a little Pig organ. Even though it's the best one they all lose tempo! This was first covered by Glen Campbell but became known on Elvis in Memphis. Big Black Mariah is a better hearse song. Candyman is startling in its perfection. Another one great early on, when they were so keen to harmonize. And Mickey on brushes! Marmaduke & David Nelson join for Cumberland: s'good with guests. Speedway too. FWIW, this is Jordan at its best.
Second Set. After an ace Casey Jones, Good Lovin' is teased by Pig and, being the Fill E, there are calls for Alligator. Easy Wind is a classic version. Though marred with some feedback the playing is wildness. Weirdly, the official replays the GL tease again here, before Bobby refrains Home on the Range. The second-ever Attics is followed by a rickety-ish Stephen. Heading into the end of the Other One Suite, Jer starts teasing Charlie right away, then adds a nice tag to the suite instead (before know he had to die). Cosmic Charlie is decent, Minglewood not so much, but they hadn't played it since 8/69 (and only twice in '69). Bobby's rather hoarse by the finish line.

Late ShowFirst Set. Ballad of Casey Jones is the best of only two that we have. Bobby says "at the risk of being repetitious, why don't we do something else in the key of G?". In the first show they did two back-to-back in the same key AND the same chord sequence. The arrangement of Silver Threads was better in '66 [5/19/66], and in '69 this was a pedal steel song for Jer, but this is well-played also. Black Peter is rote but this is a total classic Friend of the Devil. As you probably already know. Candyman has a reel flip @2:57 of 36sec (covered by the AUD). Jer announces a gospel tune but Pig ain't having it: "Wait a minute. Don't I get to play one before you bums sing that fuckin' religious song?" Pig can't get his mic working and tells Heard he's fired for his Tarzan yell. We have two of the three times She's Mine was played - all in '70 (the other is 7/11, but almost always labeled as 7/12). This and the next one are both Lightnin' Hopkins covers. Katie Mae Blues was a 1947 release, but She's Mine (copped by Van Halen as Ice Cream Man) came out in '59, the same year he released See, See Rider. This is the only SBD version. Katie Mae marks the only time Pigpen came out during an acoustic set and did two. It was played a dozen times in '70 but none better than this. A Voice from on High is the Bill Monroe song. The 1st of 4, all in '70, and probably the best. David Nelson plays mandolin; Marmaduke adds bass vocals.
Second Set. China Cat Sunflower ticks all the boxes on the silver kimono list. The SBDs have a 2: 06 cut @1:02, restored on the official. Listen close in Rider for some uniqueness. Late show: now Cumberland is played electric. Whoever said our boys are not versatile! There are better '70 versions of the next few. On Beat it on Down-14 Billy sticks with 15. Pig finally gets his Good Lovin'. After an OOT Dire Wolf, Next Time You See Me returns the spark: its nice to hear Jer & Pig duet. This is a pretty decent Dawk Staw. Phil starts a Feelin' Groovy @15:10. Stephen has a 2: 12 cut @2:17 on the SBD version. Listen for the Stephen quote in Not Fade. After so many hours of playing, they still do a half hour Lovelight! The final Jordan is acoustic.

SOURCES: Though the reynolds-kaplan_29473 and early-late_sbd_97 are labeled "late show", both SBDs contain both concerts. Both are missing Deep Elem: SBDs for the late show begin partway through Ballad of Casey Jones. The reynolds-kaplan_29473 is the most complete, however the sbd_97 has the better copies of the first songs of the early show 1st set. It fixes the funky early Candyman by punching to mono, then out to stereo. The 136575_late_aud_cooper_berger is the original Cooper AUD. It has the 2nd Candyman but runs very slow, needing +4% pitch correction. Road Trips vol. 3 no. 3 has the entire early show and all but Candyman of the late show. It switches song order around and has the channels reversed. Easy Wind (early) is on Fallout, with slightly better sound. Friend of the Devil (late) is a bonus track on American Beauty, mastered with louder guitar.

Must have been like running a marathon in 1970 with these shows with new riders....the number of tunes is staggering. And this was just the late show. Been playing this on earbuds this morning and it's so good. Got into the dead when I was about twelve years old when I listened to my brothers copy of working mans dead. Almost fifty now and this music still moves me. Love it....thank you archive the access. God I love it.

I have little use for New Riders most of the time. Short acoustic Dead set.

Is it just me or is there an awesome ujb jam around the 15 through 16-17 minute point in Dark Star. Dont mistake this for a tighten-up jam listen to Bobby he is absolutly playing Uncle Johns and it is very swwweeeet.

This show was the first time i saw the Cryptical/Other one performed. it changed my life. Please keep New Riders segment. As a side note of interest they say that they were pumping laughing gas into the audience from under Jerry's Pedal steel!

Definitely fun to listen to for historical purposes. I gave it a 4 because of the reasons listed in the title.
I thought it was funny as hell hearing the amplifier sounds. Someone must have been kicking the amps or dropping them for them to make that sound. :D
BTW, this is my birthday as well (except in 1974!)...

for those reviewers below who seem so amazed by the number of songs played, confused about the setlist, etc. - this is not the "late show" as indicated, it's the early show AND late show from this date combined. That's why you see two acoustic sets and two New Riders sets as well as the electric stuff. This is awesome Grateful Dead, for sure, but it was not played all at once....two different shows played on the same date.

It just occured to me to search my birthdate and see if the BAND played.... Well yep they did. Of course, coming of age in the 80s, I am partial to sound of the band in that era, but this is really sweet sounding... Will burn this just for posterity, that it sounds great too. Man 61 songs.... they must have played till the break of dawn.

This is truth, not spewed but offered gently with persistence. It is basic and feel-good, and I'm sure that even the casual listener could appreciate the songs and the message. It takes you away to another simpler time, a fantastic era with women and wine and all merry and no-pain. I do not know for sure whether or not that era has existed, or can exist, but for a few hours or days at a time.

Folks, this is easy. Un-hide your temporary internet files folder (from My Computer, select C: drive, then go to Tools, Folder Options, select "View" tab, make sure "show hidden files and folders" is selected, and click "apply to all folders"), and then just stream the audio. Each audio file shows up as a separate MP3 file in your (C:\documents and settings\[your user name]\Local settings\temporary internet files folder. THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR XP, NOT VISTA. From there you just drag and drop them out to a new folder on your desktop. Then, burn away. As far as this show is concerned, I had an old cassette copy of just a fraction of this show, and it was always one of my favorites. Can't wait to hear the whole thing. ENJOY!

never got to one of these marathons love the riders swa tons of shows after this time 73' on, my brother was at this Fillmore show just before my time i started summer of 71' Galick Park Manhattan College and Felt Forum that Dec. remember my brother saying somethink like they'd start around midnight and play till dawn just kept going and going and going they'd get out of that Theatre at dawn must have been something. I got to the Fillmore 3X but always early shows think i was 16 coming in from Yonkers on the 4 train to woodlawn just an amazing place and time, Jim

can anyone tell me the dead lineup for the acoustic sets? see, i hear pigpen at times, bobby, jerry, and one drummer, and sometimes someone on a wood block. is phil playing? who's playing drums?
also, if it turns out phil is indeed playing then i'd have to reduce my rating since i can't hear him at all.

This is for my dollar the best show to listin to from 1970 this is it. acoustic, electric, pig, the new riders this show is huge and "henrey" is dedicated to you if your a dope smuggler so listen to this show. GREAT SAWMILL (not merl haggerd)

Both these shows are Epic! Quintessential Dead. Easily compares with the highly regarded Barton Hall show of 77', but I feel this is far better. I wasn't the biggest fan of Ronny Pigpen before I heard this. But he's actually not drunk or to screwed up to play, and you can actually hear his organ and vocals clearly. The Rub was hot and Katie Mae was beautiful. I'm now a new fan of Pigpen (at least for this show). The set list is amazing and the NRPS are spot on and sweet. Just the acoustic sets (from both shows and bands) alone are priceless. The best Other One I've heard, and you can't find a Lovelight that beats this one. This was truly a magical event and I wish I could've been there. I'd still be high from this show 35 years later. Thank you so much for making this available, the rarest of gems for everyone to enjoy. ANYONE having anything to do with making this show available, if you are ever in Los Angeles please look me up, dinner and tokes are on me! The least I can do for such a wonderful treat for my soul.

This has got to be the longest set I've ever seen.

Wow, great setlist. Aside from the "classics", you get nice renditions of Cold Jordan, a rare Attics, and som other gems. Setlist is 5 stars.
A pretty good NRPS set. I'm no expert, though I do like their music. This seems like a pretty good sample of their 70's repertoire. Love Bobby "Ace" Weir sitting in on Mama Tried, Sawmill, MAMU.
Some audio problems in the early set. Also the vocals seem to be turned up way to loud. Did this get better throughout listenning to the whole show? Or did I just get used to it. Anyway - I would give 3 stars for sound but given the times might "curve" it up to 4.
Bottom Line: Definitely worth the download!

This is a well-recorded soundboard with a nice mix and minimal hiss, and no one will have a problem with the sound quality. My 3.5 sound rating is in the context of all the other years too. Within 1970 only, it's closer to a 5. As it says in the notes, the early acoustic set is not the splitter-generated two-channel mono mix, this is exactly what is on the tapes...meaning the right channel is sometimes 'not there'. It fades in and out until coming on strong during 'Candyman', which is fairly late in the set. I'd rather have what is on the tapes than a 'false' mix, but I'll probably hang on to the previously circulated copy of the early acoustic set just in case. This is one monster of a show and it must have been an incredible experience for the audience and the participants alike. David Lemieux has said that this show IS in the vault and will come out 'someday'. The existence of the show in the vault was confirmed by the inclusion of 'Easy Wind' as a bonus track on the recent re-master of 'Workingman's Dead'. I hope that multi-tracks exist and not just the two-tracks, as that should allow for rectification of the mix problem in the early acoustic set. Download this show and give it a listen, it may be THE prime example of what the Dead were trying to accomplish in 1970. There may be hotter versions of certain songs from other shows, but if I had to pick a show from 1970, this is the one.

...brittle soup! So says Pigpen before the boys launch into "Attics" on this sweet upgrade. A classic show, of course, but now you can hear every nuance and texture of the music to the Nth degree. Paradise waits...
